Flute Sonatas from the German Early Modern Era
This recording presents a collection of seldom played and lesserknown works that deserve more recognition and are a welcome addition to the flute repertoire. They are characterized by an era marked by historical and political events. Just as nations were torn apart so was the cultural world. The title of this collection is taken from the piece of Sigfrid Karg-Elert, who was particularly affected by the crises of the time since he was discriminated against because of his Jewish background. Karg-Elert’s Sonata, op. 140, in F sharp minor is entitled „Appassionata“, in homage to another musical role-model - Beethoven, to whose Sonata, op. 57, in F minor it alludes. This sonata in one movement still remains a surprising novelty, even for today’s audiences. Its chromaticism is particularly effective in the many long and accentuated appoggiaturas that enrich the melodic line.
