Abominable depth, a Baroque Drama
Why is it that that which is created with artifice and most defi nitely not real can capture our imagination so enduringly? Why are we, when we listen to an opera or a dramatic cantata, so engrossed by a story set in era of by-gone times, and why is it we empathise so strongly with the actions and reactions of its protagonists? The music! The music brings us closer to the drama we witness, it binds us: the audience of that night’s performance. As individuals we come, as linked beings we leave. The story and music will haunt us for a while to come, if it was well presented…
