Dichterliebe op. 48 (Heine) in der Urfassung von 1840 (#)

With this new recording, tenor Knut Schoch and pianist Mathias Weber present the well-known romantic song cycles as well as other Lieder by Robert Schumann in their lesser known versions. The Dichterliebe appears in the seldom heard first version with its original number of 20 songs, and the Eichendorff-Liederkreis op.39 is appendixed by Wem Gott will rechte Gunst erweisen, with which Schumann planned to replace the first song of the cycle, a jewel well worth discovering. The whole programme has been recorded using original Érard grand pianos, built during the same period as the songs were composed, creating an artistic synthesis and making the title 1840 a compelling headline.
This recording has its foundation in the advantagious combination by the two obviously well-matched duet partners with their highly vivid interpretation, exquisitely blending a nuanced and contrasting voice with the delicately shaded tones of an authentic grand piano, presenting „their“ songs in a very touching way, leaving out any unnecessary or inappropriate exaggeration.
