TAPESTRY,
a collection of Christmas carol arrangements framed by three pieces for trumpet/fl ugelhorn and organ by composer Bernard Wayne Sanders, captures the atmosphere of this festive season. In these three compositions for trumpet and organ, the musical ideas are interwoven, creating delicate, sometimes magnifi cent, soundscapes.
Between these tone poems are arrangements of popular Christmas carols from around the world. These include the German favorites O Lord, How Shall I meet You and The People That in Darkness Sat, the Bach melodies Beside Thy Manger Here I Stand and Break Forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light, as well as Infant Holy, Infant Lowly from Poland and SUSSEX CAROL from England. Silent Night is represented by four diff erent arrangements, including a delicate Berceuse by David L. Sanders, Bernard‘s brother.
Sanders‘ musical style is infl uenced by his American heritage. It thrives on a blend of traditional forms and compositional techniques, contrapuntal subtleties, and an appealing musical language. These works are versatile and equally suited to church, concert, or home listening.
A valid interpretation is ensured by the fact that the composer himself is playing the organ. The trumpet and fl ugelhorn parts of the Tapestries are played with skill and sensitivity by Martin Weidner. Having performed together for over 30 years, they are a perfectly coordinated team.
