The "Instrument of the year 2025" is the human voice. For this reason the German Singer Julia Barthe presents a selection of Acapella-songs, composed by Dimitri Terzakis (born 1938) and Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179). Between the lifetimes of the two composers there are more than 800 years.
In 1994-1996 Terzakis wrote 18 small monodramas, called "Songs without words", titled "Careless", "Gossip", "A Fairy-Tale" or "Monolog of a Lunatic".
Dimitri Terzakis has developed his very own musical language as a "composer between the worlds", with his work rooted in the musical cultures of Greece and the eastern Mediterranean. Yet Terzakis is by no means an epigone. He uses technical elements of ancient musical traditions to create a unique way of musical expression, characterized by horizontal, melodic forms. This melodic approach does not follow the occidental temperate system but, in various horizontal operations, makes use of micro intervals smaller than semitones.
Julia Barthe combines the songs with Hildegard's Gregorian melodies and with words and poems written by Christian Morgenstern, Hugo Ball (Dada), Elias Canetti and others.
Julia Barthe, born 1965 in Hamburg, has been improving her voice for 45 years. In this project she connects her idea of singing with her knowledge of musicology, violin playing and literature.
